“New Girl” actress Zooey Deschanel has signed on to play country star Loretta Lynn in a stage adaptation of “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” The Broadway show is based on Lynn’s 1976 autobiography and the 1980 film of the same name. Deschanel will have big shoes to fill: Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her portrayal of Lynn in the movie.
Lynn announced the role by calling Deschanel on stage during a concert at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., saying, “I have a friend here tonight. I don’t know if ya’ll remember when Sissy Spacek was with me. I brought her out here with me. She about fainted. We both fainted. She went on to do the Coal Miner’s Daughter, and you know from there. Well, there’s a little girl back stage that’s going to do the play of Coal Miner’s Daughter on Broadway… Zooey, where you at honey? Are you going to help me sing ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’?”
How do you think Zooey Deschanel will do as Loretta Lynn on Broadway?
