Zac Efron plays a Marine in the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ “The Lucky One,” and in the May 2012 issue of Men’s Health, the 24-year-old showed off the 18 pounds of muscle he gained in preparation for the role.
“By the end of the movie I didn’t recognize myself,” said Efron. “You hear about guys like Christian Bale who dive into it and are really able to transform. I’ve always wondered if I had the willpower to actually do it. And I’ll always have pride around the sense that I can.”
To bulk up, Efron teamed up with Epoch Training’s Logan Hood and had five one-hour training sessions a week. Hood told the mag there wasn’t a need for an all-day training regimen like we’ve seen other stars embrace: “If you’re eating appropriately and getting enough rest, you don’t need to train all day. All the work’s happening when you’re outside of the gym.”
