Here we go again. The industry is rumbling with rumors that NBC is looking to replace Jay Leno with Jimmy Fallon when Leno’s “Tonight Show” contract ends in 2014.

We all remember the debacle that took place when Conan O’Brien took over in 2009, only to be met with a weekly 10 p.m. show from Leno that sank NBC’s ratings all around. This led to one of the industries ugliest and most combative outings in recent memory. O’Brien then recovered with a late show on TBS while Leno sank his teeth back into the “Tonight Show” spot.

The latest rumor comes from talk that NBC has been reaching out to talent agents about finding a new host for the “Late Night” spot in 2014. This means Fallon would move into the coveted “Tonight Show” spot at 11:35 and we’d imagine, NBC hopes, bring his legion of young fans with him.

Let’s just hope everyone learned their lesson last time around and that Leno will step aside with grace should the moment arise.
