Wow, can you believe it? The summer is over.
So before stretching out on a lawn chair for the weekend we wrap up Who Won The Week for the season by seeing who won the summer.
There are a ton of choices. Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway???
Channing Tatum comes to mind. His youth as a male stripper was brought to life in “Magic Mike” where he and fellow heart throbs Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello gyrated their way to a $113 million gross. Way above what many projected. This continues Tatum’s incredible year that included headlining two films that topped the box office, “The Vow” and “21 Jump Street.”
There was also Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. The duo found love as the fresh faces of “The Amazing Spider-Man” franchise and their on and off -screen chemistry raked in over $200 million in the US alone!
And we can’t leave out “The Dark Knight Rises” – starring Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway. Even with the horrific shooting spree in Aurora, Colorado, the film took home the third biggest weekend opening of all time and is over a $400 million cume in the U.S. and closing in on a BILLION DOLLARS globally.
IS IT ONE OF THESE TWO. Gotta admit we’d like to be Tatum right about now, but… drum roll, please…
The true winner of the summer is the cast of “The Avengers.” Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson.
These stars checked their egos at the door to make one of the most hyped (and, many thought, unlikely) tentpole releases to finally become a reality. A sequel is already in the works for a 2015 release and, before that, there will be more from the Marvel crew, including a third “Iron Man” film and more installments for the Captain America and Thor characters. “The Avengers” pulled in close to $1.5 BILLION dollars in box office around the world, and isn’t done yet – the film is expanding into additional theaters for this summer farewell weekend!
And it wasn’t just “The Avengers” that was big for some of these actors this summer. Chris Hemsworth switched his Thor hammer for an axe in the box office hit “Snow White and the Huntsman.” And word is quickly spreading (following THAT news about Kristen Stewart and that Rupert fellow) that Hemsworth’s character might just be the focus of the sequel.
Jeremy Renner also did double duty in the Hollywood spotlight with the latest Bourne film “The Bourne Legacy” respectably replacing Matt Damon in the butt-kicking lead role opposite Rachel Weisz.
So, with close to $4 billion made this summer, the season didn’t gross as much as last year. But, it’s far from a disappointing result either, especially when the box office had to compete with London’s Summer Olympics (remember them???).
Now it’s onto the fall where the stakes are even higher as celebs vie for Oscar glory and their own gold statuettes.
We look forward to bringing it all to you…but for now, it’s time for a final summer snooze on the front porch, remote in one hand, BBQ tongs in the other.
