TLC has announced a U.S. spinoff of its series “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” called “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding.” Like the original series, the offshot will focus on gypsies, but the pool is naturally much smaller, as there are only 1 million gypsies stateside. Ellen K of KIIS FM will narrate the series, and she recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the differences between the two gypsy cultures.
“The Americans tend to want to break the gypsy code a little more,” she said. “They have their own rules and they take them very seriously. They see other Americans — especially the teens — and want to sort of test the boundaries more than the gypsy culture in the U.K. They do have the similarities of a fierce loyalty to each other and the way the women serve the men. The celebrations are equally as important across the board.”
