Our favorite celebrity rumor of years gone by (back in the time when ponchos and Ugg boots were the height of fashion) was the one claiming that Billy Bob Thornton only ate orange food. (It was only surpassed by the rumor that Snoop Dogg have given up the weed. That one was funny.) We imagined Billy Bob with stashes of Cheetos and carrot sticks and mashed sweet potatoes in his man purse. We never thought of Billy Bob as much of a trendsetter, but to Mariah Carey he must be what Vicki "Mama's Family" Lawrence is to us. We do everything Mama does.
Yesterday we read something that seemed a trifle amusing but altogether forgettable in The New York Daily News:
Billy Bob Thornton used to eat only orange food. Mariah Carey prefers hers pink. A source who's served the health-conscious diva tells us she's trying to confine herself to salmon, ruby red grapefruit juice and blood oranges.Ö
It wasn't nearly as odd as Billy Bob's diet, so we dismissed it. Until we read an all-too-similar yet conflicting story this morning.
The pop diva is convinced mauve-coloured foods like red grapes and plums – known for their anti-ageing benefits – will stop her developing wrinkles.
The songstress, who devised the diet with her nutritionist, now munches purple meals three days a week.
A source is quoted in Britain's The Sun newspaper as saying: "It sounds off-the-wall but it's a huge injection of healthy food in one go. Purple products are nature's best weapons in the battle against ageing. There's a saying that 'a plum a day keeps a facelift away'."
"Purple food can prevent breakdown of collagen and slow the wasting of muscles."
These stories on their own are a bit strange, but in combination they are downright confounding. But we think we've figured it out: Mariah is matching her meals to her outfits. Today she's wearing an ensemble inspired by Violet Beauregarde and will only consume red grapes, plums, and grape popsicles, but tomorrow she may lean more toward a Nicky Hilton-designed Tweety Bird get-up and eat nothing but bananas and mangoes.
