After six decades of making people smile through his hits on both Broadway and the silver screen, Mel Brooks will be the recipient of an AFI Life Achievement Award.

Howard Stringer, chairman of AFI’s board of trustees, explained, “Mel Brooks is America’s long-reigning king of comedy — as he taught us long ago, it’s good to be the king. He’s a master of an art form that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and it’s AFI’s honor to shine a bright light on laughter by presenting Mel Brooks the 41st AFI Life Achievement Award.”

He has written, directed and/or starred in such classics as “Spaceballs,” The Producers,” “Young Frankenstein” and the classic children’s television show “The Electric Company.”

The award will be presented to Brooks during a special televised gala on June 6, 2013.
