On Thursday, August 30, Snag Films will be broadcasting “Faces in the Mirror” a feature film scored to music by The Dave Matthews Band’s Boyd Tinsley. Tinsley will introduce the film online (from Seattle) and will also participate in a post-screening conversation.
The film’s music was produced by Tinsley and performed by him and a group of musicians that included his trusty bandmates Dave Matthews, Stefan Lessard and Tim Reynolds. While Dave Matthews has, of course, been seen in a bunch of flicks (“Because of Winn-Dixie,” “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry,” “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” and “Just Go With It” to name a few), “Faces in the Mirror” represented a first for Tinsley. Celebs.com’s Annlee Ellingson asked the star how he found his acting debut:
I loved acting the role of the preacher. It helped that the character I was playing, was himself on a stage (pulpit). I felt somehow more comfortable in that position. Like music, acting required me to let go of my inhibitions and trust myself. I simply became that preacher in that scene. Being raised baptist, I new enough to make the character real.
Tinsley added that the film was birthed by the death of his bandmate Leroi Moore:
I conceived the idea for the story a few months after Leroi passed. I was in a dark depression and needed to channel my pain and grief into something creative. The subject of grief in the film comes from that.
Billed as a “film scored to music,” with gorgeous images that definitely suggest a mood, we asked Tinsley to describe it a little further:
I would call the film a psychedelic drama. It is vividly shot, a little trippy and the music absorbs you. These elements combined, lead you on an emotional roller coaster ride. The film was made around the music. We danced the film to the music. They both express the same emotion throughout the film. It’s more of an experience than just a movie. The film is about a young man named Ben who comes home to bury his father. He goes on a dream-like journey through the night, meeting characters that give him something he is looking for.
