This past year has had all of us talking and in 2012, the main way we communicate on a large scale, is via social media. So what were the top stories of the year?

According to People, the most popular stories included beautiful news of love, marriage and babies. On the other end of the spectrum, there were also stories of terrible tragedies and the deaths of beloved celebrities.

Engagements were all the rage. When Miley Cyrus accepted Liam Hemsworth‘s proposal, the Twitter world lit up with messages of congratulations and speculation about wedding details. The same was true for Canadian rockers Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger, who also got engaged. Then there’s Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, who took it a step further by actually tying the knot this year.

We also said goodbye to some of our favorite celebrities. Michael Clarke Duncan‘s tragic death at the age of 54 had the world of Facebook reeling. This was also the case with Whitney Houston, a legendary vocalist who helped change the shape of music, but was sadly powerless against her personal demons.

In happy news, the announcement of a royal baby brought the world of social media to a buzzing boiling point. Kate Middleton and Prince William just confirmed on Dec. 3 that they are expecting their first child together, but already this is one of the top stories of the year.

It will be interesting to see what 2013 brings. Happy New Year to everyone!
