Taryn Manning plays a religious, drug addicted and all around crazy inmate who preaches the Bible to her fellow prisoners in “Orange is the New Black.” The actress talks about preparing for the role, saying she began going to church and reading the Bible to get a better grasp of what it meant to be a devout Christian.
“She’s very serious about reforming and Jesus Christ being her savior,” Manning told E! News of her character Tiffany ‘Pennsatucky’ Doggett. “The way that I prepared was…I went to church a bunch—like back to back to back.”
Manning says she also read the Bible so that she was able to recite scripture without hesitation.
“The same way as if I was playing a doctor and I’m not a doctor and I have to learn the medical terms, it was very important to me,” she said. “I read the Bible. It was important to me that I understood when a Christian or someone with that level of devotion speaks, it just comes right out with no hesitation. I wanted to have that flow. I did a lot of research and it’s probably one of the most challenging roles that I’ve done.”
While challenging, Manning has also has a great time being on “Orange is the New Black.”
“I get to be weird, which is fun!”
“Orange is the New Black” will return to Netflix for a second season on a yet to be announced date.
