Lady Gaga Vanity Fair January 2012

Lady Gaga lets writer Lisa Robinson into her childhood home for an insightful piece in Vanity Fair January 2012 — the same issue that features Tony Bennett‘s nude sketch of the singer. The Mother Monster poses for a dramatic shoot in New York City with Annie Leibovitz, but it’s the quotes from her interview with Robinson that are most fascinating.

Surprisingly, Lady Gaga thinks about her fans when her romantic relationships are souring: “When I fight with someone I’m in a relationship with, I think, ‘What would my fans think if they knew this was happening? How would they feel about my work and about me as a female if they knew I was allowing this to go on?’ And then I get out. [My fans] saved me from myself, because they would never allow it — the same way I would never allow anything to hurt them.”

She also divulged the nexus of her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. “I thought it would be an interesting cultural exercise to create someone [who's] not me,” she explained, “[someone] infinitely more relatable than me.”

A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about the nude sketch of Lady Gaga that Tony Bennett drew after their recording session for “The Lady is a Tramp”; that drawing will soon be auctioned for charity.

Bennett originally drew Gaga for a feature in the Vanity Fair January 2012 issue. It’s signed “Benedetto,” the name Bennett uses to sign his artwork.

Proceeds from the sketch’s sale will be split evenly between the musicians’ charities, which are Exploring the Arts and Born This Way. Bidding starts at $5,000, and the auction will end on Dec. 19. Do you dare bid on this semi-risque piece of art?
