Clooney’s ‘The Descendants’ takes LA Film Critics Awards – Complete Winners List

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association has picked its 37th Annual list of winners for its 2011 Awards. Though no film swept the dais, “The Tree of Life,” “Hugo” and “The Descendants” shone strongest. The complete list of winners follows:

Best Picture: The Descendants
Runner-Up: The Tree of Life

Best Director: Terrence Malick (“The Tree of Life”)
Runner-Up: Martin Scorsese (“Hugo”)

Best Actor: Michael Fassbender (“A Dangerous Method,” “Shame,” “Jane Eyre,” “X-Men: First Class.”
Runner-Up: Michael Shannon (“Take Shelter”)

Best Actress: Yun Jung-Hee (“Poetry”)
Runner-Up: Kirsten Dunst (“Melancholia”)

Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”)
Runner-Up: Patton Oswalt (“Young Adult”)

Best Supporting Actress: Jessica Chastain (“Coriolanus,” “The Debt,” “The Help,” “Take Shelter,” “Texas Killing Fields,” “Tree of Life.”

The Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented in New York City by the IFP, honors the best independent films of the year. While the Film Independent Spirit Awards has become the larger event and a better indicator of independent Oscar contenders (and takes place in Santa Monica the day before the Oscars), the Gothams have honored some truly worthy films in recent years.

Here’s the complete list of their year’s best:

Best Feature: TIEBeginners” (Ewan McGregor & Christopher Plummer, directed by Mike Mills) and “Tree of Life” (Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain, directed by Terrence Malick)

Best Ensemble Performance:Beginners” (Ewan McGregor & Christopher Plummer)

Breakthrough Director: Dee Rees (for “Pariah”)

Breakthrough Performance: Felicity Jones (for “Like Crazy”)

Best Documentary: “Better This World” directed by Kelly Duane and Katie Galloway

Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You: “Scenes of a Crime,” directed by Blue Hadaegh & Grover Babcock

Audience Choice Award: “Girlfriend,” directed by Justin Lerner

“The Descendants” (George Clooney, Matthew Lillard, Judy Greer) and “Martha Marcy May Marlene” (Elizabeth Olsen, Sarah Paulson, Hugh Dancy), each with three nominations, came away empty-handed.
