Awards Race News: ‘The Help’ ‘Modern Family’ Pitt, Streep, DiCaprio & Clooney Snag SAG Nominations – Complete List of Nominees

14, 2011 2:00pm

Sofia Vergara, Meryl Streep and Jessica Chastain are all vying for awards

The Screen Actors Guild has announced its nominees for end of year honors. While Clooney, DiCaprio and Pitt are all heavyweights in the best acting category, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Tilda Swinton and Michelle Williams ensure the best actress category also packs a punch.

Prized also for the way they honor an ensemble, rather than the director or producer of a film or television show, the big film nominees are “The Help,” “The Descendants,” “The Artist,” “Midnight in Paris” and “Bridesmaids,” for television comedy “The Office,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Glee” are up for the top prize while television drama sees “Game of Thrones,” “Dexter,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “The Good Wife” and “Breaking Bad” fight it out.

As for the surprises, film critic favorites like “Drive,” “Hugo,” “Shame,” and “Young Adult” missed out on nominations, as did “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Is it too soon to read anything into this just yet???

Here’s the complete list of nominees.

Meryl Streep Lands the Vogue January 2012 Cover

Meryl Streep added to her lengthy list of career accolades when she landed the Vogue January 2012 cover. The 62-year-old was interviewed to promote “The Iron Lady” and quipped, “I told [some of the ladies earlier] I was probably the oldest person to ever be on the cover of Vogue.”

Surprisingly, Streep thought her career was over at age 40, when she was offered three separate movie roles — as a witch. “Once women passed childbearing age,” she mused, “they could only be seen as grotesque on some level, as women whose usefulness had passed.”

What did Streep have to say about playing Margaret Thatcher? “It’s very easy to set people at arm’s length and judge them. Yes, you can judge the policies and the actions, but to live inside that body is another thing entirely. It’s humbling and infuriating, just like it is to live in your own body. Because you recognize your own failings, and I have no doubt that she recognized hers.”

Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in New Trailer for The Iron Lady

9, 2011 5:00am

While the previous trailer was really only a teaser, The Weinstein Company has now released the 2nd trailer for “The Iron Lady” (see below) in which Meryl Streep portrays Great Britain’s fearless prime minister, Margaret Thatcher.

That Thatcher fully occupies this role is, as usual, an understatement, much like Helen Mirren‘s incarnation of Queen Elizabeth II in “Queen,” for which Mirren won her Oscar. …Read More

Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson Rank 1&3 On Forbes Top 10 Value Actors

8, 2011 6:59am

I'm #3, you're #1... it's my move.

Every year “Forbes” ranks actors according to the dollars they generate per dollar of remuneration they receive to determine which actors provide film investors with the best return, aka “Hollywood’s Best Actors for the Buck” list.

The financial windfall earned by Summit Entertainment from the “Twilight” franchise’s latest installment, now closing in on $600 million in worldwide box-office and still holding pole position at the domestic box-office, has been astounding. As reported by Dorothy Pomerantz at Forbes, the first three movies in the “Twilight”  series have cost a total under $200 million and have generated close to $2.5 billion in revenue.

As a result, Kristen Stewart lands on top the Forbes list of actors who provide the best return for dollars spent, and only beats out Robert Pattinson because of his lower performing efforts “Remember Me” and “Water for Elephants” which may have increased his personal earnings but dilute his performance in earnings per dollar.

Forbes only considers actors who’ve been in three or more movies in the past five years, and the films had to open in more than 500 theaters. Animation efforts are also not included.

Here’s the list:

1. Kristen Stewart (“Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1″) – $55.83

2. Anne Hathaway (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Bride Wars”) – $45.67

3. Robert Pattinson (“Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1,” “Water for Elephants”) – $39.43

4. Daniel Radcliffe (“Harry Potter” franchise) – $34.24

5. Shia LaBeouf (“Transformers” franchise, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”) – $29.40

6. Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man 2,” “Sherlock Holmes”) – $18.74

7. Matt Damon (“True Grit,” “The Adjustment Bureau”)  - $15.83

8. Cate Blanchett (“Hannah,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) – $15.17

9. Meryl Streep (“It’s Complicated,” “Julie & Julia”) – $13.54

10. Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise) – $12.48

Meryl Streep Donates ‘The Iron Lady’ Paycheck to Charity

Although a former Margaret Thatcher aide accused Meryl Streep of only making “The Iron Lady” to make herself more money, a source close to the actress revealed that Streep actually kept just $1 million for herself — a small fraction of her usual fee — and donated the rest to fund the National Women’s History Museum.

“The Iron Lady,” a biopic on Margaret Thatcher, stars Streep, Jim Broadbent, Alexander Head and Alexandra Roach. It comes out in theaters on Dec. 30.

Do you think Streep should win an Oscar for her role as Thatcher?
