Dustin Hoffman is grieving the cancellation of his canceled show “Luck” by hosting a wake. Hoffman, executive producer David Milch and director Michael Mann are cohosting the sad event at an undisclosed Hollywood restaurant in appreciation of the cast and crew.
HBO canceled “Luck” earlier this week following the death of a horse on the set — the third such thoroughbred death since the show began filming in 2010. “Luck” focused on the downside of horse racing, and will air the two remaining episodes of the first season.
“While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future,” an HBO statement read. “Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision.”

George Clooney has yet another accolade to add to his arsenal: the Chairman’s Award, which he’ll accept at the 23rd Palm Springs International Film Festival for his work in “The Ides of March” and “The Descendants.” The prestigious award has previously been given to A-listers like Nicole Kidman, Dustin Hoffman and Ben Affleck.
“A consummate actor, director, producer and screenwriter, he’s demonstrated that no discipline within the film industry is beyond his reach,” said film festival chairman Harold Matzner of Clooney. “To this star of many talents, whose career, fortunately for all of us who admire him, is still a work in progress, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is proud to present the 2011 Chairman’s Award to George Clooney.”
