Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Ben Stiller & Chris Rock – Celebs.com’s WHO WON THE WEEK

10, 2012 10:39am

It was kids vs. the adults this weekend at the box office, and it looks like the kiddies won.

In one of the tighter weekends in some time, the latest edition of DreamWork’s kid-friendly franchise “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” – headed once more by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen and Cedric the Entertainer – narrowly passed Ridley Scott’s return to sci-fi with the everyone-calls-it-“Alien”-prequel-except-for-those-who-made-it “Prometheus” – starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Tom Hardy lookalike Logan Marshall-Green.

Both films earned much higher than expected earnings with “Madagascar 3″ taking $60.4 million for the number one spot and “Prometheus” just behind with $50 million, that’s a +32% at the movies compared to this time last year. All that sky-is-falling talk about this being a weak summer at theaters is over (as we predicted).

But now down to business – who here has what it takes to win the week?

Ben Stiller / Chris Rock / David Schwimmer / Jada Pinkett Smith / Sacha Baron Cohen / Cederic the Entertainer – “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted”

When you have two superstars like Ben Stiller and Chris Rock headlining your movie you just let them go and do their thing to promote the film and then start backing up the dump truck to collect the money (then give them half). But what WWTW loves is how different these two comics go about doing it.

Stiller this week used his time by unveiling a funny web series he produced that spoofs “The Bachelor” and includes some recognizable names.

Rock, on the other hand, worked the talk show circuit leaving headline-grabbing comments in his wake… and we love him for it. Over at the Today show he compared Obama to a zebra, then gave a few Chris Brown jokes to close his time there (oh, did we mention Elmo was there too?).

But at the end of the day, you can’t make everyone laugh, and in the case of these two funnymen, it’s their kids who don’t get them.

Noomi Rapace / Michael Fassbender / Charlize Theron / Idris Elba / Logan Marshall-Green / Guy Pearce – “Prometheus”

Well, it was pretty much what you’d expect when you combine the visual savvy of Ridley Scott as the director and the bewildering storylines of “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof screenwriting. “Prometheus” launches more questions than answers, but it doesn’t matter when you’re traveling with this cast.

Michael Fassbender spent the week doing some fake fighting with co-star Charlize Theron at the MTV Movie Awards, he talked about robot sex (or lack there of) with Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers and sang some Irish tunes with Jimmy Fallon.

For Theron, her second straight week hanging here at WWTW, her “Snow White and the Huntsman” co-star Chris Hemsworth stoked rumors of Theron coming on the “Thor” franchise as Enchantress. We could see that. And she revealed to Conan O’Brien her love for UFC.

While Noomi Rapace got a stylish cover story in New York Times magazine and we learned more about Logan Marshall-Green.

And the winner is…

Rebounding from her loss last week, Theron wins it.

Going through a kind of mid-career resurgence with her crowd pleasing roles playing the evil Queen in “Snow White” and an frigid taskmaster in “Prometheus,” New York Times critic A.O. Scott put it best in his “Prometheus” review when writing she’s “doing everything she can to make this an icy June at the movies.”

Charlize: You have an open invitation to bring your Ice Queeness to WWTW any day.
