Ashford, as long with his wife Valerie Simpson, made up hitmaking music duo Ashford and Simpson, who scored a #1 on the R&B charts in 1984 with “Solid”.
Ashford and Simpson also penned countless smashes for other artists, such as Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman”, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, and Diana Ross’s “Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand”.
Nick Ashford had been battling throat cancer. He was 69 years old.
Jerry Leiber was also one half of an unstoppable songwriting duo. As Leiber & Stoller, he and friend Mike Stoller penned classics like “Jailhouse Rock”, “Stand by Me”, and “Love Potion No. 9″.
Leiber passed away yesterday at the age of 78 due to cardiopulmonary failure. Writing partner Mike Stoller said:
“He was my friend, my buddy, my writing partner for 61 years. We met when we were 17 years old. He had a way with words. There was nobody better. I am going to miss him.”
Everyone just assumed that drugs were to blame when soul singer Amy Winehouse died on July 23rd. An autopsy did not reveal a clear cause of death, so authorities were waiting on toxicology reports, which they hoped would shed some light on her tragic passing.
But according to Amy’s family, the reports are back, and the mystery hasn’t been solved: there were no drugs in the singer’s system when she died.
A spokesman for the Winehouse family released this statement:
“Toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy’s system at the time of her death.
“Results indicate that alcohol was present but it cannot be determined as yet if it played a role in her death.
“The family would like to thank the police and coroner for their continuing thorough investigations and for keeping them informed throughout the process. They await the outcome of the inquest in October.”
UPDATE: TMZ points out an interesting fact: Amy’s family only mentions illegal substances, not prescription drugs.
Now Russell will not be able to defend himself, because he was found dead in his home last night after what appears to be a suicide.
Investigators report that a roommate discovered Russell hanging in his bedroom and called 911.
A friend of Russell’s estranged wife Taylor tells Radar that the reality star “has been up all night. She is hysterical, and can barely speak. She has no idea why Russell would do this. She doesn’t know how she is going to be able to tell her daughter, Kennedy.”
Russell Armstrong was 47 years old.
Lane was found dead inside his motel room on August 11th. The “Cherry Pie” belter had suffered from substance abuse for years, and it has been reported that alcohol and pills were found near his body.
However, no immediate cause of death was discovered during his autopsy, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. Toxicology tests are pending and may take seven to eight weeks to be fully processed.
Lane’s manager Obi Steinman chalks up his friend and client’s death to the bottle, saying, ”
“He lost his battle over alcohol… He was one of the great rock-and-roll frontmen and singers of all time. His music helped shape the ’80s.”
Lane–born John Kennedy Oswald–was found in his room at the Comfort Inn motel in Woodland Hills, CA, yesterday evening, authorities report. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No cause of death has been reported, but according to TMZ, pills and vodka were found at the scene.
Rest in peace.
