Actor and Eastern Congo Initiative founder Ben Affleck recently revealed the inspiration for his considerable charity work over the past few years: his children.
“I got to a point in my life where I felt like I had been very fortunate,” he admitted, “and I wanted to do something more with my life than just make movies and try to make money. I wanted to do something that was important to me in other ways and would serve as an example to my kids.”
Most recently, Affleck leveraged Facebook’s new layout to create a timeline about his work with the Eastern Congo Initiative. The nonprofit helps local organizations bolster the region through health care and other social programs. “I tell [my kids] it’s important to be involved in the world in ways that help others and not just yourself,” he added.
George Clooney has yet another accolade to add to his arsenal: the Chairman’s Award, which he’ll accept at the 23rd Palm Springs International Film Festival for his work in “The Ides of March” and “The Descendants.” The prestigious award has previously been given to A-listers like Nicole Kidman, Dustin Hoffman and Ben Affleck.
“A consummate actor, director, producer and screenwriter, he’s demonstrated that no discipline within the film industry is beyond his reach,” said film festival chairman Harold Matzner of Clooney. “To this star of many talents, whose career, fortunately for all of us who admire him, is still a work in progress, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is proud to present the 2011 Chairman’s Award to George Clooney.”
