Can Producers Crank Out ‘Avatar 2′ by 2014?

6, 2012 2:00pm

AvatarJames Cameron had originally hoped to have “Avatar 2″ in theaters sometime in 2014, but producer Jon Landau says that this timeline may not work out.

“We’re not naming dates, but I think 2014 will be a tough date for us to make,” Landau told Empire. “It’s about getting it right… movies make release dates; release dates don’t make movies.”

Landau also said that one of the production team’s key objectives is ensure that each film in the “Avatar” trilogy can stand on its own. “That’s where movies fall into trouble — when they try to say, ‘You know what? It’s really one movie and there’s an intermission — so we want each one to be a standalone movie. The next one will kick off where the last one ended. But just like ‘Avatar’ resolved itself and doesn’t feel like a setup to another movie, you don’t want ‘Avatar 2′ to feel like a setup for ’3.’”

“Avatar” is currently the only film that has grossed over $2 billion. Do you think “Avatar 2″ can bring in similar numbers?

“Avatar” director James Cameron is the target of a $2.5 billion lawsuit courtesy of sci-fi writer Bryant Moore. Moore says that Cameron used two of his screenplays — “Aquatica” and “Descendants: The Pollination” — to create “Avatar.”

Moore is suing Cameron, Cameron’s production company and 20th Century Fox for over $1.5 billion in damages and $1 billion in punitives, according to TMZ. “Avatar” made over $2.78 billion when it was released and is one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

Bryant Moore pointed out several similarities between his screenplays and “Avatar,” including unbreathable atmospheres, blue and green skin, bioluminescent plant life and a battle scene on branches.
