Romance is blossoming once again, except this time it’s between George Lucas and Disney.
It’s just been announced that Disney has acquired Lucasfilm Ltd. for an astounding $4.05 billion deal, including both cash and stock. Disney will now own the rights to all Lucas properties, from stage and sound companies to the ever-lucrative franchises of films like “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones.”
So what does this mean for fans? It means more “Star Wars” films. Disney says it currently plans on releasing a new film in the franchise every couple of years, beginning in 2015.
This wasn’t an easy decision for Lucas, but one that he gave great thought to. He explained, “I wanted to put the company somewhere in a larger entity which would protect it. Disney’s a huge corporation. They have all kinds of capabilities and facilities. So there’s a lot of strength that’s gained by this… There’s lots and lots of opportunities at Disney that we wouldn’t have at any other studio.”
See Lucas speak for himself about his decision to step away from Hollywood.
