The film was actually inspired by an article in the Washington Post by Wil Haygood. It centers around a black man who served as the White House butler for more than 30 years, serving eight presidents. Whitaker plays the butler, Cecil Gaines, and Winfrey stars as his wife.
The cast of “The Butler” also includes Alan Rickman (Ronald Reagan), Jane Fonda (Nancy Reagan), John Cusack (Richard Nixon), James Marsden (John F. Kennedy), Liev Schreiber (Lyndon B. Johnson), Robin Williams (Dwight Eisenhower), Nelsan Ellis (Martin Luther King Jr.) and Orlando Eric Street (Barack Obama).
