Sean Penn Named Ambassador at Large for Haiti

Michel Martelly and Sean Penn

On Tuesday evening, Haiti’s president Michel Martelly named Sean Penn the ambassador at large for Haiti. The honor recognizes Penn’s contributions to Haiti’s earthquake relief via his charity, the J/P Haitian Relief Organization.

Speaking at a ceremony at the National Palace, President Martelly quipped that the “only downside” to Penn’s appointment as ambassador at large is that he must now address him as “Ambassador” rather than by his first name.

Since Sean Penn founded J/P HRO in 2010, the charity’s medical clinics have treated nearly 2,000 patients a week free of charge, provided free primary school education for 460 kids, removed 200,000 cubic meters of rubble and much more.
