As everyone prepares to get down and party tonight at the Golden Globes, this weekend WWTW celebrates two films that you will likely not see at next year’s Globes.
With awards contender “Zero Dark Thirty” taking the number one spot with $30 million after going wide this weekend, new releases “A Haunted House,” Marlon Wayans’ latest horror spoof, and “Gangster Squad,” the ‘40s mob shoot-em-up lead by Ryan Gosling in the ensemble cast, went two and three with $18 million and $17 million, respectively.
Which of these actors won the week? We’re glad you asked. Let’s find out.
Ryan Gosling – “Gangster Squad”
The hot Canadian was everywhere this week. Going on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to confess his love for Girl’s Scout cookies (and let’s not forget the hilarious “Knife Guys” bit with Will Ferrell), to People declaring him “America’s Most Wanted Man.”
But it doesn’t look like it was enough to get “Gangster Squad” a respectable box office return (hey, the guy can only do so much).
Now we should say this also, “Squad” was kind of doomed from the beginning. After originally slated to open last year, due to it opening so close to the Aurora theater shooting in July, the release date was moved to this weekend (including taking out a scene where a shoot out happens in a movie theater).
But Gosling will be just fine. Teaming with “Blue Valentine” director Derek Cianfrance and “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn in separate films later this year, as well as shooting a Terrence Malick film, there’s more Gosling on the way. (You’re welcome).
Marlon Wayans – “A Haunted House”
You knew it was going to happen sooner or later. After a troth of found-footage horrors a Wayans has finally brought the spoof to the genre.
Marlon Wayans stars, writes and produces the film, which takes on everything from the “Paranormal Activity” films to “The Devil Inside.”
Promoting the film this week he revealed many things about himself. For example, did you know he thinks up his best tweets on the toilet (who doesn’t?), or that he was in a film with the fabulous Atlanta Housewife Kenya Moore, as he reveled to Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live.”
But we loved when he dug into the “Scary Movie” franchise, which he and his brothers are no longer a part of. Over at HitFix he called the upcoming fifth installment more like an episode of “Celebrity Rehab,” with Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan and Heather Locklear slatted to star.
Tell it like it is, Marlon!
And the winner is…
Got to give this week to Gosling. Sorry Marlon, but you’re up against one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. If we were going on comedy, you’d take the crown. Yes, Gosling is known to have a funny bone, but we think your Wayans pedigree surpasses him.
