Randy Jackson will be returning to “American Idol.” However, instead of sitting in a judge’s chair, he will be joining the show’s 13th season as a mentor.
Jackson announced he would be resigning from the show as judge earlier this year. He was the only original judge remaining on the show, having sat in the chair for 12 seasons. For the upcoming season, Jackson will be taking over music producer Jimmy Iovine’s place, who has served as a mentor for the last three seasons.
“[Jackson]‘s role will be more involved than Jimmy’s,” a source told E! News.
Fox is expected to make an official announcement some time today. Meanwhile, “Idol” producers are still scrambling to find a third judge. Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez have both been confirmed as judges. It seemed as though producer Dr. Luke would be filling the third seat, but he was forced to decline due to a conflict of interest.
“American Idol” will return to Fox in January 2014.
