Oprah Winfrey has played many roles in her life, both onscreen and off. One role she had yet to experience, though, was that of being a mother.
That all changed when the television mogul opened her Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. She’s now known as “mom Oprah” and she has truly taken that to heart. As Winfrey herself says, “Being able to step into the mother role and be a real mother, friend, companion, adviser, comforter to these girls has added another level to my life that really just came as a surprise to me. I didn’t really know that I would love it so much.”
Winfrey says she is often texting or on the phone with the girls, and that she makes herself available to them whenever they need. That can’t be easy since dozens of girls have attended the school since the first graduating class took place this year. Six of those graduates now attend college here in the United States.
