First Lady Michelle Obama appears on the cover of the February 2012 issue of More Magazine, and in the accompanying interview, the FLOTUS discusses her mentoring program at the White House and the secret to success.
Obama says of success, “I sort of thought, what’s the mystery here? What is it about this place that makes some people — even myself — think that some people should have access to it and others shouldn’t? And that’s where I discovered that there is no mystery to this stuff. It is hard work. It’s access; it’s being able to envision it. It’s also knowing how to ask for help when you need it.”
Mrs. Obama’s White House mentorship program pairs teenage girls with female senior leaders in the Obama administration. “I wanted [the students] to experience this notion that if you can walk the doors of the White House once a month and sit down with the first lady and her chief of staff and some other senior officials, and they’re talking to you and you get used to hearing your voice in the space, then it becomes not a big deal,” she explained.
