As most of the industry draws their attention to the Sundance Film Festival, which began late last week, there wasn’t much effort put into this weekend’s releases as the box office was dominated by holdovers. I’m also in Park City, so this will be an abridged version of WWTW. But seeing we’re still in the weak release slate of January, there wasn’t that much to go crazy about for this past week.
Arnold Schwarzenegger – “The Last Stand”
For Arnold Schwarzenegger and the release of his first leading role in close to 17 years, “The Last Stand,” this weekend was supposed to be his return to leading man status. He went on Redit’s AMA. He even invited the press to ride around with him in a tank! What’s not to love about this guy’s comeback. How about the film? With poor reviews and only a $6.6 million projected earning by the time the holiday weekend ends, it might be time to tell Arnold to hang up the leading man hat.
Mama spirit – “Mama”
Have you seen the trailer to the latest Guillermo Del Toro presented release, “Mama”? It scared the hell out of us and it seems many others too. Projected to top the weekend with $30.5 million, this horror once more proves that if Guillermo Del Toro puts his name on it the movie is guaranteed to scare the hell out of you. It also helped that the film received strong reviews throughout the week. What can we say, we love a demented spirit terrorizing a family, with Jessica Chastain playing the goth adopted mother to boot!
Can’t get enough of “Mama”? Here’s the short that inspired the feature.
And the winner is…
This isn’t a tough one. The “Mama” spirit is all we could talk about this week. If you’re not trekking through the busy streets of Park City, we recommend you spend a few hours in a dark theater with her.
