This isn’t unusual by any means, as many songs get passed between artists, but Lewis expanded on that by saying, “It was the same version and production but mine’s better.” She continued, “It was a bit annoying to see how big a hit it was around the world but if I’d released it maybe it wouldn’t have done as well.”
Lewis herself went on to admit, “There are so many songs I’ve recorded, only to hear other people singing them. It happens all the time.”
The success of the single didn’t fall into Rihanna’s lap, though. The “Umbrella” singer pushed hard with heavy promotion, including a corresponding video that seemed to be produced without regard to cost. In the end, it paid off, with the single climbing to No. 1 in an astounding 25 countries.
