Two sources told The Hollywood Reporter that NBC will be making an announcement this spring regarding the “Tonight Show” in the 2013-14 season. Apparently, it will be Leno’s last as host of the “Tonight Show” and Fallon is expected move from “Late Night” to the 11:35 pm spot as early as summer 2014.
Sources say NBC wants to bring in Fallon to draw a younger audience to compete with Jimmy Kimmel on ABC.
“The more time Jimmy Kimmel is in that slot, the more the younger audience goes that way, the harder it is for [Fallon] to keep that audience,” the source said.
Leno is currently signed-on through the 2014 season and is not expected to take the news lightly, nor will he want to retire before his long-time late-night rival, David Letterman (who also has a contact through 2014).
Both NBC and Leno’s rep have denied the rumours.
Do you think it’s time for Leno to release his reigns on the “Tonight Show?”
