With only one major release opening in the States this weekend there wasn’t much drama in deciding WWTW, but Jennifer Lopez certainly didn’t need the supporting role in “Ice Age 4: Continental Drift” to take the prize (more on that later).
The fourth installment of this unlikely franchise (starring regulars Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo) added some new friends with the casting of Nicki Minaj, Drake, Jopez and Queen Latifah to top the weekend box office with an estimated $45.5 million. However, there’s a reckoning on the horizon with the box office preparing for the return of The Dark Knight… but that’s to discuss next time. For now, let’s see why J.Lo won the week (the first to take the honor for a second time – for those scoring at home).
Jennifer Lopez – “Ice Age 4: Continental Drift”
The big news this week was the shake up at “American Idol” as both Steven Tyler and Lopez announced they are leaving the show. But it was how Lopez did hers that pulled on our heartstrings.
First going on the Today show Thursday to promote her tour with Enrique Iglesias, Lopez admitted to Savannah Guthrie that she was not sure if she’d return to the show, even getting emotional while talking. Then later that day she confirmed that she wouldn’t return on “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest’s radio show.
When Lopez first came on as a judge two years ago her “Jenny From The Block” stature that made her a superstar in the early 2000s had faded and she needed a way to find a connection with the younger pop audience. And if the show could make Paula Abdul relevant again then it was more than obvious it would give a jolt for Lopez (mission accomplished).
But Lopez has done it the right way. As it always seemed that Tyler was just on board to say a few witty (albeit tongue-tied) comments and put a little shock in the show until the Aerosmith bus was fueled up for another tour, Lopez has always seemed to take an interest in helping the talent on the show and that resonated with the audience. She now moves forward with a younger fanbase and hopefully less of the tabloid fodder that wore out her welcome with us in the first place (remember “Bennifer”?)
Oh, wait, this is J.Lo!
With news this week that her boy toy Casper Smart is saving up for an engagement ring, it seems she never tires of the attention.
Jenny, we’ll miss you on “Idol” but with the tour and starring in the next Taylor Hackford movie you certainly won’t be far from our sights, and we like that.
