Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman star in the newly released “Identity Theif” about a man who tries to catch the woman who has stolen his identity. Bateman, who also served as producer on the film, had the plot changed to include a female co-star so he could hire McCarthy.
“I saw the premiere of ‘Bridesmaids‘ and the following morning I called the people pushing the buttons over here at Universal and said, ‘Can we switch the thief from a guy to a woman because I’d give my left arm to work with this lady,’” Bateman said. “So we did that, I took her out to lunch and talked her into it and we switched the script and away we went.”
While comedy fans might be excited to catch a flick starring this duo, the movie has been getting some pretty bad reviews. The New York Times referred to “Identity Thief” as a “lazy comedy,” and Time magazine said the movie was actually a bit “disturbing.” However, everyone seems to maintain that McCarthy brings the laughs, despite a mediocre movie.
“Identity Thief” is out in theatres today.
