James Gandolfini died yesterday at the age of 51 after an apparent heart attack in Italy. The late actor’s assistant, Tom Richardson, said Gandolfini spent his last day with his family.
“The family had a marvelous day together, and when he returned to the hotel Jimmy [Gandolfini] went to the bathroom and that is when something happened,” Richardson said, adding that Gandolfini was still alive when the ambulance arrived.
According to NBC News, the actor was found collapsed on the bathroom floor by his teenage son, Michael. Michael rushed to call for help and hotel staff reportedly tried to resuscitate Gandolfini before the ambulance arrived.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the emergency call was made at 9pm, Rome local time. Gandolfini was transported to the hospital after emergency care workers were unable to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at 10:40pm.
An autopsy report is likely to be released on Friday.
