J.K. Rowling has announced a new extended partnership with Warner Bros., which will include a brand new movie from the wizarding world. The author took to her Facebook page to announce that Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will be the inspiration for the upcoming film.
Rowling made sure to let fans know that this new film would in no way be associated with Harry Potter‘s story. Saying it is neither a prequel or a sequel to the series that made her so famous, Rowling added that the new movie will feature the fictional author of “Fantastic Beasts,” Newt Scamander. Additionally, the story will be set 70 years prior to Harry Potter’s story and will begin in New York City.
Rowling will be writing the screenplay herself, revealing that she simply could not trust another writer with the world she created.
“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film,” she said. “I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts’, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.”
She added: “I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”
