Is Ricky Gervais bulletproof? He seems to think so. In a recent interview, he indicated that he’s heading into his Golden Globes hosting gig with a fearless attitude, saying, “What’s the worst that can happen? I only do things that can end my career — that’s the fun, that’s my extreme sport. I think if you get final edit, which I do and I demand, and you get your own way and you’re happy with what you’ve done, nothing else matters. You’re bulletproof.”
Gervais has hosted the Golden Globes twice before, and in a separate interview, he revealed that he’s already identified the celebrities he plans on calling out in this year’s ceremony. “I have specific targets,” he said. “I’ve written the gags, although targets isn’t the word I’d use — subjects, maybe.”
Despite his sharp tongue, Ricky Gervais maintains that celebs — and by extension, the media and viewers — shouldn’t take his barbs personally. “I’ve got nothing against anyone in the room, I’ve worked with many of them, I like many of them, I admire most of them,” he explained. “They’re just gags. I’m not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings or give them a bad name or undermine the moral fabric of America. I’m a comedian, I’d rather they laugh than gasp, but I’ll cherish the laughs along with the gasps.”
What celebrities do you think Gervais will lampoon this year? Do you plan on tuning in to find out, or will you wait to read the recaps?
