Hugh Laurie and executive producers David Shore and Katie Jacobs announced yesterday that “House” will end after this season. The medical drama has been running for eight seasons; in the trio’s prepared statement they noted that they will have completed 177 episodes by April 2012.
“The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years — but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to everyone involved,” the statement read. “The producers have always imagined ‘House’ as an enigmatic creature; he should never be the last one to leave the party. How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air.”
Entertainment Weekly reports that although there have been rumblings in the past of NBC picking up “House” from Fox, sources say that the show’s cost and age make this option unlikely.
Laurie has previously said that he’ll retire from TV when “House” ends. Do you think he’ll stay true to his word now that the series has an end date?
