“Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” opened in theatres this past weekend, taking the top spot at the box office with $19 million. The action/horror/comedy movie beat out other new flicks, “Parker” and “Movie 43.”
However, $19 million is a bit disappointing for a major motion picture. Despite the film’s star power and 3D ticket upcharge, the flick was still unable to take home mega bucks its opening weekend. Internationally, “Hansel and Gretel” is certainly making waves. The movie earned $35.8 million in the international markets, bringing home a total of $54.8 million in its opening weekend worldwide.
Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, “Hansel and Gretel” is a darker, more adult twist on the old fairy tale of the same name. The movie begins 15 years laters with the siblings hunting down witches, not unlike the one who terrorized them as children.
The film was produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.
