Don’t Let the Title Fool You!

While “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” may have a documentary sounding title, don’t let that fool you! This enjoyable British comedy from veteran director Lasse Hallstrom (“Chocolat,” “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”), blends political satire with the rollercoaster of love and, you guessed it, salmon fishing!

Adapted for the big screen by Academy Award winner Simon Beaufoy (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “The Full Monty”) “Salmon Fishing” tells the uplifting tale of a sheik who has a big dream – to bring salmon fishing to Yemen and to thus bring peace to the Arab region. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative (adorably played by Emily Blunt) to turn his idea into reality, a seemingly impossible feat that requires Britain’s leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor), who highly doubts the project could come to fruition.

Those in attendance at the press day for the film got to hear Blunt speak a few Mandarin words from the film!

Blunt: “A very nice Chinese lady teacher came around to my flat, and she had translated it from the script. The script had just had it in English and simply said in brackets, “(she speaks this in fluent Chinese).” I was like, okay, so I have to learn Mandarin at some point! So, this woman came around and I learned it phonetically, so I know nothing about how to say, “Hello. How are you?” but I do know how to talk about salmon!
McGregor: But she nailed it! My wife speaks Mandarin and she said she did a very, very good job!

Blunt, on fishing: “My experience fishing when I was younger was with my Dad. He loves to do the deep-sea fishing, where we have to go way out, which also means huge waves, particularly off the coast of the UK. And so we would go off the coast of Scotland and Cornwall and Dad would do these eight-hour fishing trips and we would come back the color of your pale shirt, you know, just so ill! I’d just be hurling off the side of the boat the whole time. I don’t have good sea legs as they say!
