Demi Lovato is launching a mental health scholarship in memory of her father, Patrick Lovato, who passed away last weekend. The singer opened up about the death of her estranged father during an appearance on “Good Morning America.”
“I’m handling it okay,” she said. “My father and I didn’t have the most ideal relationship but at the end of the day he’s still my dad.”
She added: ”It’s difficult. I grew up with him and he’s a wonderful person, but I’m handling it OK.”
It is unclear what caused Patrick’s death. He was battling cancer, but also struggled with mental health issues.
“My father dealt with mental illnesses and he wasn’t able to function in society and that happens to a lot of people,” Demi said.
In memory of her late father, Demi has joined forces with CAST Recovery for the Lovato Treatment Scholarship. The scholarship will cover the expenses for one person at a time to those dealing with mental health issues and addiction.
