“The Hunger Games” has built up some serious buzz ahead of its March 23 opening in theaters, leading some box office observers to boldly predict a $140 million debut. Tracking services, however, are predicting a more conservative opening in the ballpark of $82 milltion to $115 million.
“They are hitting it out of the park when it comes to all audience segments,” a film executive told The Hollywood Reporter. “No matter how you slice and dice it, this is an all-audience, four-quadrant movie.”
Fandango, which lets moviegoers pre-purchase tickets online, reports some 1,200 sold-out shows. IMAX theaters have been forced to add 3 a.m. shows after 150 midnight screenings sold out.
Should “The Hunger Games” make over $116 million in its debut, it would pass “Alice in Wonderland” as the highest March opener in history. Do you think THG can do it?
