“Cory’s character will be written off and [it] will deal directly with drug addiction and the circumstances surrounding Cory’s death,” said Fox Entertainment chairman, Kevin Reilly.
He added that the cast of the show will also film a public service announcement about drug addiction and proceeds from the episode will be donated to fund created in memory of Monteith.
“The third episode will be Finn Hudson being written out of the show,” Reilly said. “It would be difficult to come out of the gate right away and then recover.”
Monteith was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13. His cause of death was a lethal mix of alcohol and heroin.
“Nobody was shocked but everybody was ultimately shocked because it was an accident,” Reilly said. “It was not intentional. It was an accident that happened to someone struggling with addiction.”
“Glee” returns to Fox on September 26.
