Can you imagine Christina Hendricks playing any character on “Mad Men” other than that of the complicated and sensual Joan? Neither can we, but Hendricks actually first auditioned for the roles of Midge and Peggy.
In a new feature story with The Hollywood Reporter, Hendricks revealed how difficult playing the character of Joan Holloway was for her in the beginning. “I thought Joan was such a bitch, and I struggled sometimes trying to make her as real as possible because I thought, ‘Who would be so mean?’” she admitted.
As “Mad Men” wraps its fifth season, Hendricks and her character have evolved into a role that has far surpassed the writer’s original plan to have Joan simply be a foundation for the character of Peggy. With a controversial storyline involving an “Indecent Proposal”-type offer, Hendricks finds herself at the forefront of a barrage of controversy. “The question is,” she asked, “what would you do to protect your family? Joan is raising her son all on her own. She has no help from anybody. So is it noble? Is it slutty? I don’t know.”
One thing is certain: Whether you agree or disagree with the actions of Joan Holloway, she has become one of the hottest characters on one of the hottest shows around today.
