Another year almost over, and it’s time to celebrate another anniversary. Birthdays, weddings, events and, of course, school graduation ceremonies all leave their mark, and tick-tock by us each year with increasing frequency.
Perhaps the new news that Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum are going to become parents in 2013 is the perfect way for them to take stock of what their latest movie contains in spades, a sense that we’re all trying to get to a place where we feel secure, whether that be via love, career or our relationships with friends.
“10 Years” is a candid look at the angst and anxiety created by a 10-year high school reunion and is centered, with equal measures of sincerity and drama, around an enviable cast led by GQ’s Movie Star of the Year Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Rosario Dawson, Ari Graynor, Chris Pratt, Justin Long, Max Minghella, Lynn Collins, Kate Mara, Brian Geraghty, Ron Livingston and Anthony Mackie.

Here’s the official word on the film: Channing Tatum plays Jake, who is deeply in love with his girlfriend (Jenna Dewan-Tatum) and ready to propose—until he runs into his high school flame (Rosario Dawson) for the first time in years. Jake’s friend Cully (Chris Pratt) married his cheerleader girlfriend (Ari Graynor) and has been looking forward to the reunion so he can finally apologize to all the classmates he bullied in high school. However, after a few too many drinks, the jock-turned-family man ends up reverting back to his old ways. Meanwhile, longtime rivals Marty (Justin Long) and A.J (Max Minghella) spend the night picking up right where they left off, vying to impress the hottest girl in class (Lynn Collins). The famous one of the group, Reeves (Oscar Isaac) is now a rock star, but is still too shy to talk to his high school crush (Kate Mara).
While that might sound like the typical run-down of events at any alumni gathering anywhere in the country, “10 Years” never seems to be forcing the tension, instead operating like a roving party, ebbing and flowing as emotions and reminiscences surface in this group of colleagues and competitors. While the name-cast could have you bewildered in the hands of another director, first-time helmer Jamie Linden (writer of “Dear John” and “We Are Marshall”) serves the story with a reassuring sense of sincerity that’s definitely worth checking out on any Sunday night.
