Country superstar and “American Idol” champ Carrie Underwood recently made a statement about gay marriage and equal rights that might surprise some of her religious base. As reported by US Weekly, the born-and-raised Christian believes that everyone has a right to love and marry whom they choose. As for people who justify their hate behind the pages of a Bible, Underwood is deeply against it.
“That’s not how I would want myself as a Christian to be represented,” she declared.
Underwood went on to say, “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”
While this might not seem like a grand statement or an act of putting oneself out there, for a successful country artist with a large conservative audience, it is a risk (just ask the Dixie Chicks). Regardless of the outcome, Underwood has truly come into her own by finding the courage to speak her truth and openly take a stance on such an important equal rights issue. Jesus might be at the wheel, but Underwood is definitely in the driver’s seat.
