With the Olympics opening, a weak release slate and the horrific shooting in Aurora still on everyone’s minds, the domestic weekend box office had a 22% drop from last year. But “The Dark Knight Rises” stayed strong its second weekend out to stay atop new releases “The Watch” and “Step Up Revolution.”
In fact, the final installment of Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader received a 42% spike in sales from Friday to Saturday, more than likely because most stayed home Friday to watch how Danny Boyle and his London mates would pull off the Olympic opening ceremonies. Finishing the weekend with a $65 million take, it’s also creeping closer to the coveted $500 million global tally.
However, the comedy “dream team” of Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill in “The Watch” didn’t live up to the hype as it only took $13.3 million for the weekend, landing them in second. While the latest edition of the unlikely “Step Up” franchise, “Step Up Revolution 3D,” only totaled $11.8 million.
With the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises” coping with more serious matter, like Bale visiting shooting victims, for this week’s WWTW we decided to focus on funny men Stiller, Vaughn and Hill.
Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill – “The Watch”
Stiller has once again teamed with Vaughn (having done so previously in films like “Zoolander,” “Dodgeball,” “Starsky and Hutch” and “Anchorman”) for “The Watch” and over at USA Today the two talk about their comedic stylings. While also this week Stiller emphasized how his film, originally titled “Neighborhood Watch,” had no relation to the Trayvon Martin shooting in Florida by neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman earlier this year.
Stiller and Hill seem to have enjoyed their time together as The Hollywood Reporter revealed this week that the two are developing a comedy the two hatched on the set of “The Watch” that will be set in Hawaii.
Vaughn announced this week that his production company has picked up the rights to the novel “The Risk Agent.” A change of gears for Vaughn, this is an action drama following a civilian with combat skills. We’ll see if audiences can accept Vaughn in a Bourne-like role. But before then, we’ll see him in a movie a little more his speed as he’ll reteam with his “Wedding Crashers” partner Owen Wilson in “The Internship.”
And the winner is…
Though it was uncharacteristically a down weekend for this time of the summer, Ben Stiller proves it can’t faze him. Coming off another hit installment voicing Alex the lion in the “Madagascar” franchise, “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” earlier this summer, “The Watch” won’t affect his global status.
And him telling Hitfix this week that “Zoolander 2″ is still in the works, there’s things to be excited about in the future from Mr. Stiller.
