Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno have all signed on to collaborate with Cameron on the screenplay for all three upcoming films. The movies are set to film simultaneously with production beginning next year.
“In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that ‘Avatar’s’ world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen,” Cameron said in a statement.
The first “Avatar” sequel is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2016, the next in December 2017 and the last in 2018. The original 2009 film earned itself the title of a highest-grossing movie of all time, having earned $2.7 billion.
