There’s a lot of buzz building around “Life of Pi” – the film adapted by Ang Lee from Jann Martel’s award-winning bestseller. Lee has had some hits (“The Ice Storm,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”) and some misses (“Taking Woodstock,” “The Hulk“) and this new adventure was met with some skepticism until footage was shown in the Spring.
Having now opened the prestigious New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, the film is being met with thunderous applause and jaw-slacked wonder. It probably also doesn’t hurt that the colors and ethnic themes remind viewers of another film that did kinda okay at the box office, “Slumdog Millionaire.” Still, this adventure is probably more akin to “Titanic” and “Cast Away” than Fox Searchlight’s Oscar-winning indie.
