It looks like “American Idol” will be wiping the slate clean when it returns for Season 12. With both Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez moving on, there’s intense speculation about what the show’s next move will be.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the shake-up on the judging panel has resulted in late-night brainstorming sessions.
Last season’s ratings were the worst yet, and if “Idol” hopes to regain the commercial success it once knew, then they need a flawless execution of their casting choices. One of the biggest names being discussed is Mariah Carey. Her friendship and business relationship with Randy Jackson makes her a viable option. Add to that the fact that she’s one of the most successful artists of all time and has a vocal range that leaves most others in the dust. However, Carey would come with a hefty price tag. A franchise that might be looking to cut its budget — after all, ad revenues are sure to fall in the wake of last season’s ratings — could literally be unable to afford the risk.
It will be interesting to see who will be sitting in the judge’s chairs when “American Idol” returns in January. Who do you think will make the cut?
