Ferrara joined the Showtime series in season five as Officer Frank Verelli, the cop who falls for a sober Jackie (Edie Falco). The actor is best known for his role on FX Network’s “Rescue Me,” but he is also a well known stand-up comedian who has been nominated twice by the American Comedy Awards for best male stand-up.
Showrunner for “Nurse Jackie,” Clyde Phillips, previously told The Hollywood Reporter that Jackie is far from defeating her demons.
“There needs to be consequences; you can’t just do it as a one-time thing and say to the audience, ‘Hey, come back and watch year six and she’s on the wagon again,’” Phillips said. “I don’t think that’s fair to the dynamic of authentic story telling. Her struggles will be even deeper next year.”
“Nurse Jackie” returns to Showtime in April 2014.
