This afternoon marks the 2011 National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, and the Black Eyed Peas and Kermit the Frog are among the high-profile entertainers that will help President Obama light the 26-foot-tall Colorado blue spruce.

The 89th edition of the holiday event will be hosted by Carson Daly and feature performances by Ellie Goulding, Marsha Ambrosius, OneRepublic, Big Time Rush and Rodney Atkins.

The National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony was initiated in 1923 by President Calvin Coolidge. This year’s event will take place this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
